Howell Straczek LLC-Lake Oswego, OR
NOT just another opening for an Associate to work in public accounting; here’s why!
Talk with one of the partners to evaluate whether a career with this firm might interest you. Reach out to me, and I’ll help facilitate that introduction with your resume. No hoops to jump, just a conversation to ensure you are in the right place at the right time in your accounting career.
Commitment to Staff Development:
Howell Straczek is not just a CPA firm; it’s an advanced school where you will learn and work hands-on with some of the best Mentors you could find.
They emphasize quality CPE for CPAs, including live Webinars through the AICPA and live webinars/in-person through the Oregon Society of CPAs. The most elite CPE available are the AICPA National Conferences, specifically in Tax practice areas. Audit and EBP and senior staff advancing to engagement leadership positions will attend these conferences.
Portland State University’s Masters of Taxation program is another high-quality training program the firm supports through partial tuition reimbursements for approved staff.
Let’s be honest; having a great mentor is everything. Here you have two! Both partners, Jon and Bart, can tell you the partners and managers who were true Mentors to them in their personal and professional development years as CPAs and CPA candidates. Jon and Bart know the people who made a difference for them and want to be and do the same for people who work at their firm. Their resumes are not typical of partners in some of the smaller boutique firms. Few less experienced CPAs have direct access to work with people like Bart and Jon.
Depth and Breadth of Work:
Acquiring broad professional experience in many local firms can be challenging, and the assignments tend to be all income tax. At Howell Straczek, the client base is more varied, and the work is more complex. In other firms, newer staff do not always get the more interesting assignments.
Howell Straczek has an Accounting and Auditing practice with Compilation, Review, and Audit work. They have a specialization in Employee Benefit Plans and are a member firm of the AICPA Audit Quality Center. And most importantly, a track record of the highest rating for Peer Review, conducted every three years, including their most recent on January 31, 2022.
The tax practice includes not only the expected individual and corporate income tax returns, as well as partnership and S corporations, but also provides tax work that other firms either avoid or do little:
• Income tax provisions work for corporations, where such corporations have Big 4 or other auditors
• Consolidated corporation returns and financial statements
• Business purchase, sale, and other transaction consulting
• Like-Kind exchanges and Involuntary Conversion planning, consulting, and return reporting
• Fiduciary income tax returns – Forms 1041 and related state returns
• Estate tax and inheritance tax returns – Forms 706 and various state returns
• Non-profit returns – Forms 990
• Private Foundation returns – Forms 990-PF
• Extensive Multistate tax preparation and analysis
• Retirement Plans – Forms 5500
• Multistate tax consulting and return preparation
• Property tax returns, both Industrial and Personal
Our client receives referral work from other CPA firms for specialized work. There is no greater Professional reference than this recognition from peers in the industry.
Quality of Practice Aids and Resources:
Bottom line – Howell Straczek LLC has invested in tools, and we will invest in you and your training.
They use CCH ProSystems fx Tax, one of major firms’ most widely used tax return preparation software, or its cloud-based version CCH Axcess. It is very sophisticated, costs more, and requires more training than Lacerte, Ultra Tax, and other lower-cost alternatives used by other local firms. Their practice needs CCH’s quality and capabilities to support the sophisticated tax work performed for clients.
Prosystems Tax includes a Planning module for individual income tax projections that draw the primary data from completed current year returns in ProSystems fx Tax.
The backbone of our paperless annual file documentation system is ProSystems Engagement. The product is superior to others on the market, and many in the firm are long-term users.
The Audit, Review, and Compilation documentation is CCH Knowledge Coach, a comprehensive A&A documentation system.
They have state-of-the-art Online libraries that include CCH AnswerConnect, which fully links ProSystems fx Tax and cross-references to the US Master Tax Guide, and an annual hard copy reference book. If you read something in the US Master tax Guide, CCH AnswerConnect will give you a much deeper and more comprehensive explanation and examples.
The Accounting & Auditing reference library is based on CCH Accounting Research Manager (ARM), which links directly to our Knowledge Coach A&A documentation. Reading an A&A checklist and unsure about some terminology or implementation? Click the ARM explanation link, connecting you instantly to the right place in the library!
Our documentation, from the most uncomplicated individual return to the most complex tax or audit engagement, is paperless and fully functional for all remote work, whether working from home on a hybrid schedule or working from the field in a client’s office. Many IT infrastructure and administrative support programs and processes are required to support this.
This position, ideally, will pay in the $65-85k range, depending on several factors.
The firm offers a comprehensive benefits plan hybrid work arrangement and is potentially open to someone who resides outside the metro area, such as Bend.
The ideal candidate will have 1-4 years of experience, including previous tax compliance experience and the desire to research tax and accounting issues.
